Why does my child's feed “know” them? How algorithms work

Recommendation algorithms, attention and ads — explained so children can take back control.

By the EduOrvix curriculum team · 5 min read · Updated 19 October 2026

Short answer: Video and social apps use recommendation algorithms that learn from what you click, like, share and how long you watch. They show more of what keeps you watching, because attention is what many free apps sell to advertisers.

The loop

  1. You watch a video to the end.
  2. The app records that as a signal.
  3. It finds similar videos other people watched to the end.
  4. It shows you more of those — and the loop repeats.

Why it matters for children

  • Feeds can narrow quickly into one topic.
  • Autoplay and endless scroll make stopping hard by design.
  • Sponsored posts can look like normal content.

Teach children to take control

  • Search for new topics on purpose to “retrain” the feed.
  • Use “not interested” buttons.
  • Look for #ad or “sponsored”.
  • Ask: “Why do you think the app showed me this?”
