Short answer: Coding classes teach how to write instructions for computers. AI-understanding classes teach how computers learn from data, why they make mistakes and how to think critically about them. Both are useful; they're not the same thing.
| Coding class | AI-understanding class | |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | โHow do I make the computer do this?โ | โHow did the computer learn to do this โ and can I trust it?โ |
| Core skills | Syntax, loops, functions, apps | Data, patterns, training, testing, bias, ethics |
| Typical project | A game or website | Training and testing a model, auditing a dataset |
| Lasts when tools change? | Concepts yes, languages change | Yes โ the ideas are tool-independent |
Watch out for โcoding with an AI stickerโ
Many courses add โAIโ to a coding curriculum. Ask: will my child learn how AI learns and fails? Will they be able to explain it in their own words? Is there a parent report?
Which one first?
For 8โ10 year olds, playful AI understanding and computational thinking come first โ no syntax needed. From 11, some coding helps children build AI projects. At EduOrvix, code is a tool when it helps understanding, never the goal.
